Marriage Licenses 1837.

The following marriages and marriage licenses were transcribed to the website from a scrapbook titled MEMORABRABILIA, KOSSUTH HISTORICAL SOCIETY located in the Alcorn County Genealogical Society Library/Research Room in the Alcorn County Courthouse in Corinth, MS. The original source of the information is “History of Old Tishomingo County Mississippi Territory, Edited and Compiled by Fan Alexander Cochran, published 1968, pages 37, 47-50.”

No marriages were solemnized in Tishomingo County during the year 1836. However, it is reasonable to suppose that a few couples, at least, made the trip to adjoining counties for the purpose of being made one.

John P. Azbell to Jane Phillips

The first marriage license issued in the county was dated April 2, 1937, and was as follows:

"know all men by these presents, that we, John P. Azbell and Nicholas McMillion, all of the county of Tishomingo and State of Mississippi, are held and firmly bound unto his excellency, Chas. Lynch, Governor of the State of Mississippi, and his successors in office in the penal sum of two hundred dollars, which payment well and truly to be made and done, we bind ourselves, our heir, and so forth, jointly, severally and firmly by these presents; put to ? (blacked out word) on condition that there is no lawful cause to obstruct the marriage between John P. Azbell and Jane Phillips.
Given under our hands and seals this 2nd day of April 1837.

Signed J. P. Azbell (seal), N. McMillion (seal) Attest: B. Bullard, D. C. May A.D. 1837 and sixty seconds of American Independence. Signed: David Carter (seal).
